Health threats to the LGBTQ+ community are varied and often deeply personal. From mental health challenges to outright discrimination in the clinical setting, LGBTQ+ patients sometimes face enormous barriers to care that have widespread implications for our nation’s health. The good news is that more physicians than ever before have adopted nondiscriminatory approaches and prioritized inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ people in their practices. Leading health organizations like the American Medical Association has developed comprehensive training and tools to help physicians better care for LGBTQ+ individuals, and is fighting a national effort to push back on government and third-party intrusion into the exam room and affirm the rights and autonomy of LGBTQ+ patients in medicine. Dr. Jesse Ehrenfeld, AMA’s immediate past president and the first openly gay physician to lead the 178-year-old organization, will examine the evolution of LGBTQ+ health care in the U.S., the current trends to watch, and what’s ahead.
